Will Your Job Survive AI?

Recent research from Gartner indicates that artificial intelligence (AI) will eliminate 1.8 million jobs by 2020, however, it will also create 2.3 million jobs. The people who will be impacted by this shift depends on industry and job title, but it is worthwhile for all tech pros to keep an eye on the AI and machine learning horizon.

Tech Jobs That Could Be Impacted by AI

It is impossible to predict just where and how job losses and gains will occur. It is also impossible to predict who will see their jobs disappear. However, experts agree that the first places where AI will take over human roles will be in security monitoring and basic programming. Tech professionals in these fields should be aware of the rise AI and machine learning, and they should take steps now to hedge against potential job loss.

Other experts expect that artificial intelligence will also take over low-level and mid-level management tasks.  At first, AI will supplement the work of managers but the goal for many AI leaders is to develop algorithms that can take over management tasks. In theory, an algorithm can analyze data produced by an IT department and determine how to best allocate resources for projects faster than humans, which could eliminate – or significantly reduce –  many IT management roles.

Prepare Now To Take Advantage of AI

The rise of AI will not occur overnight. For now, AI is starting to handle low-level and mundane tasks which free up humans to focus on more strategic tasks. The full takeover in areas like security monitoring and programming will take a few years. However, professionals in this field should act now to build and grow their skill set.

Don’t forget that AI will also create a host of new jobs. To stay relevant, anyone whose roles could be threatened by machines should learn the skills and languages required to work with AI so they can take advantage of the new opportunities that artificial intelligence will create.  This includes skills like machine learning, Python and R. There are bootcamps and MOOCs dedicated to building these skills and IT professionals can easily fit such courses into their current schedule and lifestyle.

Gartner predicts that by 2021, AI augmentation will create $2.9 trillion in business value with 6.2 billion hours of worker productivity behind it. The opportunity to grow with AI rather than be eliminated by it is truly endless. The sooner tech professionals get a solid grasp of the landscape and begin forging a path, the better off they will be in the next three years.
